Most dogs in Bangalore do well with a bath every four to six weeks, and long-coated breeds need a trim on top.

• Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Huskies have double coats. Bathe them every four to six weeks and brush once a week, or every day when they're shedding.
• Shih Tzus, Maltese and Poodles have coats that keep growing. Groom them every four to six weeks and brush every day or two.
• Beagles and Indies have short coats. A bath every four to eight weeks is enough, with a wipe-down in between.

If you're not sure, start with one session a month and adjust to how your dog's coat holds up between visits.

Labradors and Golden Retrievers have double coats that shed all year, so regular brushing and baths, not shaving, keep the fur under control.

They are the two biggest groups among the dogs we groom in Bangalore, well ahead of Shih Tzus.

A double coat has a dense undercoat that insulates against heat as well as cold, under a longer topcoat. Shaving it removes that protection, can leave the coat patchy as it grows back and doesn't stop the shedding. A bath with a thorough blow-dry loosens the dead undercoat, and brushing between sessions takes it out before it ends up on your sofa.

Bangalore's mild weather means these coats rarely get a rest, so book regular sessions rather than waiting for the shedding to get out of hand. In the warmer months from March to May, ask for a shorter trim, not a shave.

A Shih Tzu's coat never stops growing, so it needs a trim every few weeks and a brush every day or two to stay free of mats.

The Shih Tzu is the third most common breed we groom in Bangalore. Mats form where fur rubs, behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar. Once they're tight, they pull on the skin, and the kindest fix is a trim, which is why dematting is a service of its own.

A haircut keeps the coat short enough to brush at home. Face and paw trims keep fur out of the eyes and off the pads, and eye cleaning wipes away tear stains.

When the weather turns damp, dry your dog's coat all the way down to the skin and check for ticks after every walk.

Damp fur and skin folds are where skin trouble starts. Towel-dry your dog after rain, and finish a bath with a blow-dry, as our sessions do.

Ticks and fleas are more active in warm, humid weather. An anti-tick bath washes your dog with an anti-tick shampoo, and your vet can advise on a regular preventive. After walks in grass, check the ears, armpits and between the toes.
