Packages start with a bath and blow dry, with ear and eye cleaning and nail clipping, and go up to a full grooming and spa session with a haircut. You can also book single services on their own, such as an anti-tick bath, paw or face trims, dematting, teeth cleaning or a massage.

• Shih Tzus, Maltese and Poodles have coats that keep growing. Groom them every four to six weeks and brush every day or two.
• Beagles and Indies have short coats. A bath every four to eight weeks is enough, with a wipe-down in between.

If you're not sure, start with one session a month and adjust to how your dog's coat holds up between visits.

Each coat type needs different care. Here is what the most popular breeds need.

• Labradors have a double coat that sheds all year. Bathe every four to six weeks and brush weekly, or daily when they shed. Never shave it.
• Golden Retrievers carry a long double coat that tangles behind the ears and on the legs. Brush a few times a week and bathe every four to six weeks. Trim, don't shave.
• Shih Tzus have a coat that keeps growing. They need a trim every four to six weeks, brushing every day or two, and eye cleaning for tear stains.
• German Shepherds shed heavily twice a year. A bath with a thorough blow-dry and regular brushing take out the dead undercoat.
