Fresh dog food is cooked from whole ingredients you can recognise, such as chicken, paneer, pumpkin and millet, instead of being extruded into dry kibble. Sploot meals are cooked in small batches, then sealed in retort packs: the sealed pack is heated to kill bacteria, so it needs no preservatives and keeps unopened for up to 24 months. You open a pack and serve it; there is nothing to cook or measure.

Kibble is cheaper and easy to store. Fresh food is closer to what you would cook at home, easier to digest for many dogs, and more appealing to fussy eaters. Many parents mix the two: a fresh meal on top of kibble is an easy way to start.

As a guide, feed about 100 g a day to a small dog (up to 10 kg), 200 g to a medium dog (10–25 kg) and 300 g to a large dog (over 25 kg), split across two meals, and adjust if your dog gains or loses weight.
