A dog harness, or body belt, takes the pull of the leash off your dog’s neck and spreads it across the chest. Choose an H-harness for everyday walks, or a padded harness with a front ring for dogs that pull.

“Body belt” and “harness” mean the same thing: straps around the chest and shoulders that the leash clips onto. A collar is fine for ID tags and dogs that walk calmly. Choose a harness if your dog pulls, coughs on the leash, is still a puppy, or is a flat-faced breed like a Pug or Shih Tzu, whose airway a collar can press on.
| Type | Best for | We stock |
|---|---|---|
| H-harness | Everyday walks, calm walkers, most Indies. Light and quick to put on | Sploot, Pawgy Pets |
| Padded vest | Comfort on long walks and dogs that slip out of straps. The handle helps on stairs and in the car | Pawgy Pets Padded |
| Front-clip | Dogs that pull: clipping the leash at the chest turns the dog back towards you | Pawgy Pets Padded (front ring) |
| Y-harness | Active dogs; leaves the shoulders free | Not yet |
Measure your dog’s chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs, with a soft tape. Match the measurement to the chart below, not the breed. Between sizes? Choose the larger one and tighten the straps.
| Size | Chest (cm) | Typical dogs |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 30–40 | Chihuahua, toy Pomeranian, small puppies |
| S | 38–50 | Shih Tzu, Pug, Beagle puppy |
| M | 48–65 | Beagle, Indie, Cocker Spaniel |
| L | 60–80 | Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd |
| XL | 75–95 | Large Labradors, Rottweiler (padded harness only) |
Yes, when it fits. Check that two fingers slide under every strap, that the straps don’t rub the armpits, and that your dog can’t back out of it. Take it off at home: a harness is for walks, not all-day wear. Check the fit again every few weeks while a puppy is growing.
Close the buckles, hand-wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and hang to dry. Don’t tumble-dry: heat weakens the webbing and buckles.
A light H-harness with plenty of adjustment, so it grows with them. Recheck the fit every couple of weeks.
A harness. Flat-faced breeds have narrow airways, and a collar presses on the throat when they pull.
Not on its own: training does that. A front-clip harness makes pulling less rewarding and walks safer while you train. Sploot walkers walk every dog on a harness for the same reason.
No. Take it off indoors so the skin can breathe and the straps don’t rub.
