Finding a vet in Gurugram: guide and FAQs
The Haryana Animal Husbandry & Dairying Department runs 28 government veterinary hospitals and 43 veterinary dispensaries in Gurugram district, along with two mobile veterinary vans and a disease diagnostic lab. In the city, its hospitals include those at Kadipur, Badshahpur, Daultabad, Dundahera, Garhi Harsaru, Gurugram village, Kherki Daula and Manesar. These hospitals mainly treat livestock, so call ahead to check that a vet can see your dog or cat.
The department lists hours of 7.30 am to 2 pm from 16 April to 15 October, and 8.30 am to 3 pm from 16 October to 15 April. Hospitals are closed on Sundays and gazetted holidays.
The department's Gurugram offices are the Deputy Director, Intensive Cattle Project (0124-2202115) and the Sub Divisional Officer, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (0124-2200084).
Every pet dog within Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) limits must be registered with the MCG, and the dog must wear the registration token. You can register online at saralharyana.gov.in or at an MCG Citizen Facilitation Centre. You need an identity proof, a photo of the dog with you, and the dog's rabies vaccination certificate from a vet.
Call the clinic before you set off, so the vet is ready and you know they are open. Government veterinary hospitals in Gurugram close by 2 pm or 3 pm, depending on the season, and on Sundays. The Haryana department says emergency cases are attended at any hour, free of cost, so call your nearest government hospital first.
For a stray or injured animal on the road, the MCG animal helpline is 98213-95178. It covers stray cattle, dogs and monkeys, and the MCG sends a team to the spot. The MCG's general 24x7 helpline is 1800-180-1817.
Livestock owners in Haryana can call the toll-free number 1962 between 6 am and 10 pm for a mobile veterinary van.
On the way, keep your pet still and warm, carry it on a flat surface if it may have a back or leg injury, and do not give human painkillers: several common ones are poisonous to dogs and cats.
Summer: walk dogs early in the morning and after sunset, test the pavement with the back of your hand, and keep water out at all times. Short-nosed breeds such as pugs and bulldogs overheat fastest; heavy panting, drooling or wobbling needs a vet straight away.
Monsoon: ticks multiply in the damp, and tick fever is common. Check your dog's ears, neck and paws after walks, keep tick prevention up to date, dry paws and skin folds after rain, and avoid standing water, which can carry leptospirosis.
Diwali and winter: firecracker noise frightens many pets, so keep them indoors in a quiet room with the windows shut and make sure they wear an ID tag. On days of poor air quality, keep walks short.
