The Delhi government's Animal Husbandry Unit runs 47 veterinary hospitals, 26 dispensaries and a polyclinic at Bawana (011-27752913), spread across the city's districts. Each district lists its hospitals and the vet in charge on the Development Department's website.
Treatment is given on an OPD slip, first come first served. The department lists OPD hours as 9 am to 1 pm, with emergency cases seen until 4 pm. Dogs can be vaccinated there against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus, but you buy the vaccine yourself on the vet's prescription.
The unit's head office is on Zorawar Singh Marg, Tis Hazari (011-23890485).
The New Delhi Municipal Council runs its own veterinary hospital on Shantipath Road, Moti Bagh, near the National Railway Museum (011-24672161). Its OPD for small pets runs 8 am to 8 pm on working days, with surgery and X-rays from 9 am to 4 pm. It offers neutering and spaying for dogs and cats, and free X-rays and anti-rabies vaccination, subject to availability. Dogs in the NDMC area are registered there for Rs 50 a year.
Call the clinic before you set off, so the vet is ready and you know they are open. Most government hospitals see emergencies only until 4 pm.
The Delhi government's veterinary hospital at Tis Hazari is open 24 hours on all days. It is on Zorawar Singh Marg near Pul Mithai, at the end of the lane between Tis Hazari Courts and St. Stephen's Hospital. Its 24-hour animal care helpline is 011-23967555 or 011-20833238.
For an injured stray, the Delhi SPCA at Tis Hazari can be reached on 011-23965369.
On the way, keep your pet still and warm, carry it on a flat surface if it may have a back or leg injury, and do not give human painkillers: several common ones are poisonous to dogs and cats.
Summer: walk dogs early in the morning and after sunset, test the pavement with the back of your hand, and keep water out at all times. Short-nosed breeds such as pugs and bulldogs overheat fastest; heavy panting, drooling or wobbling needs a vet straight away.
Monsoon (normally late June to late September in Delhi): ticks multiply in the damp, and tick fever is common. Check your dog's ears, neck and paws after walks, keep tick prevention up to date, dry paws and skin folds after rain, and avoid standing water, which can carry leptospirosis.
Diwali and winter: firecracker noise frightens many pets, so keep them indoors in a quiet room with the windows shut and make sure they wear an ID tag. On days of poor air quality, keep walks short.
