5 (20)GoogleGovernment veterinary hospitals in Rajasthan are run by the state's Animal Husbandry Department (Pashupalan Vibhag). Call ahead to check hours and which services your nearest hospital offers for pets.
The department also runs mobile veterinary units, reached on the helpline 1962. The service was launched in Jaipur in October 2024, with 536 units across the state. Each unit has a vet, a livestock assistant and a driver, and goes to the owner's home to treat sick animals. The call centre's vets also give advice on common animal illnesses over the phone. The service is aimed at livestock owners.
The Jaipur Municipal Corporation requires pet dogs and cats to be registered, with a fine of Rs 5,000 for owners who do not register. Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. The corporation's website has a Dog/Cat Registration link.
Call the clinic before you set off, so the vet is ready and you know they are open.
For a dead or stray animal on the road, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation's line for removal of dead and stray animals is 0141-2322482. Its call centre, 0141-2747400, is open 8 am to 10 pm.
For an injured stray, Help in Suffering, an animal welfare charity at Maharani Farm, Durgapura, rescues and treats injured, sick and abandoned animals. Its phone number is 8107299711. For sick cattle and other livestock, call 1962.
On the way, keep your pet still and warm, carry it on a flat surface if it may have a back or leg injury, and do not give human painkillers: several common ones are poisonous to dogs and cats.
Summer: Jaipur gets extremely hot, and roads and sand burn paws. Walk dogs only early in the morning and after sunset, test the pavement with the back of your hand, keep water out at all times and give your pet a cool, shaded place indoors. Short-nosed breeds such as pugs and bulldogs overheat fastest; heavy panting, drooling or wobbling needs a vet straight away.
Monsoon: ticks multiply in the damp, and tick fever is common. Check your dog's ears, neck and paws after walks, keep tick prevention up to date, dry paws and skin folds after rain, and avoid standing water, which can carry leptospirosis.
Winter and festivals: nights get cold, so give older dogs, puppies and short-coated breeds a warm bed off the floor. Firecracker noise at Diwali frightens many pets, so keep them indoors in a quiet room with the windows shut and make sure they wear an ID tag. On kite-flying days, keep walks away from loose kite string, which can cut paws and tangle around legs.
