More than an adult dog. AAFCO, whose standards most pet foods follow, sets a minimum of 22.5% protein (on a dry-matter basis) for growth, against 18% for adult dogs, along with more calcium and phosphorus in the right balance. Recipes built on whole meat, eggs and paneer reach that without fillers.

Split the day’s food evenly across the meals, and keep fresh water out all day.
A growing puppy eats roughly twice as much for its weight as an adult dog. Start with about 100 g a day for every 3 kg your puppy weighs, split across its meals, and weigh your puppy every week. You should be able to feel the ribs easily but not see them; if the ribs disappear under a layer of fat, cut back a little, and if they start to show, feed more.
Yes, but it is hard to balance at home. Growing bones need calcium and phosphorus in the right ratio, and the dal, rice and milk many Indian homes give puppies falls short on both. Cow’s milk also upsets many puppies’ stomachs once they are weaned. If you cook at home, ask your vet about a calcium supplement, or use a formulated recipe for most meals.
Small breeds such as Shih Tzus and Pomeranians at about 9–12 months, medium breeds such as Beagles and Indies at about 12 months, and large breeds such as Labradors and German Shepherds at 12–18 months. Large breeds grow for longer and are sensitive to too much calcium and too many calories, so ask your vet before changing a large-breed puppy’s diet.
Change over across 7–10 days: a quarter of the new food for two or three days, then half, then three quarters, then all of it. Going slowly lets your dog’s stomach adjust. Loose stools for a day or two are common; if they last longer, slow down.
Soft puppy food in four small meals a day. Fresh recipes can be mashed with a little warm water for very young puppies.
No. After weaning, many puppies can’t digest lactose well, and milk often causes loose stools. Puppies don’t need it once they eat solid food.
Yes, a little plain paneer or curd is fine as a treat. Keep extras under a tenth of the day’s food so meals stay balanced.
Occasionally, yes. Fed every day, puppy food’s extra calories can make an adult dog put on weight.
Yes. A fresh meal on top of kibble makes it more appealing and adds moisture.
