Age is a guide, not a rule: an active 9-year-old Labrador may not need a change yet, while a slowing 7-year-old might.

Older dogs are less active and need fewer calories, but they still need good-quality protein to hold on to muscle. Soft, moist food is easier for worn or missing teeth and helps dogs that drink too little. Smaller, more frequent meals help a slower digestion.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish support joint comfort and a healthy coat. Keeping your dog lean matters just as much: an extra kilo is a lot for an old dog’s joints. For stiffness, ask your vet about a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement alongside food; food alone rarely provides a therapeutic dose.

Sudden weight loss, drinking a lot more water, refusing food, vomiting or a swollen belly in an older dog need a vet visit first. Kidney and liver problems are common in old age and need a prescribed diet.

Change over across 7–10 days: a quarter of the new food for two or three days, then half, then three quarters, then all of it. Going slowly lets your dog’s stomach adjust. Loose stools for a day or two are common; if they last longer, slow down.
