Yes, if the food is complete and balanced. Dogs are omnivores: they can get the amino acids they need from dairy and plant protein as well as from meat. Plant protein is less concentrated, though, so a good vegetarian recipe combines several sources, such as paneer with lentils, or lentils with quinoa. Dal and rice alone, the way many homes feed dogs, falls short.
Home-made vegetarian diets most often run short on vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, calcium and iodine. A recipe formulated as a complete meal is designed to cover them; if you cook at home, ask your vet whether your dog needs a supplement. Watch your dog’s coat, energy and weight in the first two months on any new diet.
Plain home food is fine in small amounts as a treat, not as the whole diet.
| Food | OK? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Paneer, curd | Yes, in moderation | Plain, unsalted. Some dogs don’t digest dairy well |
| Plain idli, plain rice | Yes, occasionally | No chutney or sambar |
| Dal | Yes, plain | Cooked well, no tadka |
| Roti | Occasionally | Plain; not for wheat-sensitive dogs |
| Onion, garlic | No | Toxic to dogs, cooked or raw, including in gravies |
| Grapes, raisins | No | Toxic even in small amounts |
| Chocolate, sweets with xylitol | No | Toxic |
Vegetarian recipes include dairy: Punchy Paneer uses paneer and ghee, and Go, Go, Cottage Cheese uses cottage cheese. A Green Affair, Oh My Greens and Pumpkin’ It Up are fully vegan, with protein from lentils, chickpeas, quinoa and peas. Choose vegan if your dog doesn’t tolerate dairy, or if your home avoids it.
Change over across 7–10 days: a quarter of the new food for two or three days, then half, then three quarters, then all of it. Going slowly lets your dog’s stomach adjust. Loose stools for a day or two are common; if they last longer, slow down.
Puppies need more protein and calcium than adult dogs, so a vegetarian diet needs extra care while they grow. Punchy Paneer and Go, Go, Cottage Cheese can be part of a puppy’s diet; ask your vet before making it the whole diet.
In the amount a formulated recipe contains, yes. As an extra, keep it small: paneer is rich, and some dogs don’t digest dairy well.
It can help if the trigger is a meat protein such as chicken. If dairy is the problem, choose one of the vegan recipes, or see our food for sensitive dogs.
