Finding a vet in Mumbai: guide and FAQs

The BMC's Veterinary Health Department does not list a pet hospital of its own. It handles rabies vaccination, sterilisation, online dog licences and on-the-spot treatment for sick or injured animals. Its free helpline is 7564976649. For dog licence queries, call 022-20853284 ext 318, Monday to Saturday, 10.30 am to 5.30 pm.

The Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals, run by the Bombay SPCA, a charity, is on Dr. S. S. Rao Road, Parel. Its OPD runs 9 am to 2 pm together with the Bombay Veterinary College, and it sees emergencies 24 hours a day. It has a digital X-ray for dogs, cats and birds, and sterilises pet dogs. The 24-hour hospital enquiry line is 8591659398.

The Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital at Saat Rasta, Mahalaxmi, was set up under a BOT agreement between the BMC and Tata Trust. It is a charitable hospital, open 24x7. Call 022-65383538 for appointments.

Mumbai Veterinary College at Aarey, Goregaon, offers clinical services to pet owners, with X-ray, ultrasound, ECG and blood tests. It does not publish OPD hours, so call the college on 022-20840278 first.

Call the clinic before you set off, so the vet is ready and you know they are open.

Two hospitals see emergencies around the clock. The Bombay SPCA's hospital in Parel takes emergency cases 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (8591659398), and its ambulance carries injured animals until 11 pm. The Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mahalaxmi runs a 24x7 emergency and critical care department (022-65383538).

The BMC's free animal helpline is 7564976649. Stray dog complaints go to the BMC dog control office for your area, from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm: City, Mahalaxmi (9987798436); Bandra to Jogeshwari (9076202208); Goregaon to Dahisar (9076202207); Kurla to Mulund (8692068993).

On the way, keep your pet still and warm, carry it on a flat surface if it may have a back or leg injury, and do not give human painkillers: several common ones are poisonous to dogs and cats.

Summer: Mumbai is hot and humid before the rains. Walk dogs early in the morning and after sunset, and keep water out at all times. Short-nosed breeds such as pugs and bulldogs overheat fastest; heavy panting, drooling or wobbling needs a vet straight away.

Monsoon: Mumbai gets very heavy rain and waterlogged streets. Keep dogs away from flood water and puddles, which can carry leptospirosis. Ticks multiply in the damp, so check ears, neck and paws after walks and keep tick prevention up to date. Dry paws, ears and skin folds after every walk to prevent fungal skin infections.

Diwali: firecracker noise frightens many pets, so keep them indoors in a quiet room with the windows shut and make sure they wear an ID tag.
