Finding a vet in Bangalore: guide and FAQs

Government veterinary hospitals in Bangalore are run by the Karnataka Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services. The Bengaluru Urban office is headed by a Deputy Director (080-23418327). The department's helpline is 1800 425 0012, from 7 am to 9 pm.

The Veterinary College at Hebbal (Bangalore 560 024) runs a teaching hospital and pharmacy that treat both livestock and pets. Its evening clinic runs from 1.30 pm to 9 pm. The college's phone numbers are 080-23411483 and 080-23410509.

In December 2023 the department decided to close the Jayanagar veterinary hospital and 26 clinics in the city. Deccan Herald reported that this left Bangalore with nearly 70 government veterinary centres, including 18 hospitals. Call ahead to check that your nearest one is still open.

Call the clinic before you set off, so the vet is ready and you know they are open. The government hospital at the Veterinary College, Hebbal, runs an evening clinic until 9 pm.

Karnataka's 1962 veterinary helpline gives free doorstep care through mobile veterinary units. Its call centre runs 24 hours a day, and the ambulances run from 9 am to 5 pm. Most of the animals it treats are livestock.

For an injured or sick stray, call the city corporation's helpline on 1533. Veterinary inspectors visit the site, though rescues are handled only in a limited capacity.

On the way, keep your pet still and warm, carry it on a flat surface if it may have a back or leg injury, and do not give human painkillers: several common ones are poisonous to dogs and cats.

Summer: Bangalore is milder than most Indian cities, but the hottest weeks before the monsoon can still be hard on dogs. Walk them in the early morning and evening, keep water out at all times, and watch short-nosed breeds such as pugs and bulldogs closely. Heavy panting, drooling or wobbling needs a vet straight away.

Rainy season: ticks multiply in the damp, and tick fever is common. Check your dog's ears, neck and paws after walks, keep tick prevention up to date, dry paws and skin folds after rain, and avoid standing water, which can carry leptospirosis.

Cool months and festivals: short-haired and older dogs may need a warm bed on cold nights. Firecracker noise around Diwali frightens many pets, so keep them indoors in a quiet room and make sure they wear an ID tag.
